Scientists at the University of Glasgow say they have found a key genetic indicator of how long an individual will live.

They say the lengths of telomeres, pieces of DNA, could indicate whether a young bird is likely to live to a ripe old age.

The discovery could eventually help predict human life expectancy which could be a massive breakthrough in population studies.

Christmas trees used as flood defences

A project turning unwanted Christmas trees into "green" flood defences is to be expanded across England, after a successful pilot in Cumbria.

The Environment Agency has been using the trees instead of steel pilings, to stabilise riverbanks.

It makes the rivers less likely to cause floods after heavy rain.

The scheme has been tested on the Derwent, Marron and Glenderamackin rivers in Cumbria, and the River Bollin in Cheshire.

The trees, often donated by the Forestry Commission, also provide a habitat for wildlife and help filter out silt which can smother fish eggs.

Starfish - an example of the value of our biosphere

Year 10, this is a great example of the value that our biosphere has to offer us and another key reason why we should conserve it. Can you find any more good examples to bring to next lesson?

A spiny starfish found in waters off the North of Scotland is said to be the key to finding a new treatment for conditions such as asthma, hay fever and arthritus.

It is thought by scientists that chemicals in the slimy goo that covers their bodies could inspire new medicines.

Aurora Borealis is a natural light display in the sky found in the high latitude regions (usually between 3 and 6 degrees latitude in the Arctic and Antarctic).

They are caused by a collision of energetic charged particules in the high altitude atmosphere and are a phenomenon that many people have high on their list of 'things to see before they die'.

A new Canary island emerges from under the ocean

An underwater volcano has bubbled toward the surface off the coast the southernmost island of the Canaries for over a month now, staining the sea green and spewing magma up to 65 feet in the air.

Until recently, the explosive power of the volcano was barely visible from the surface. Now, stones and debris have been seen shooting out of the volcano as it rises toward open air.

The underwater volcano has now breached the surface and many in the Canary Islands are brainstorming names for the new island. Proposed names include "The Discovery," "Atlantis," and "The Beast." Yet, even if the volcano does surface in to a new island (as predicted), a new name may not be necessary. Just three miles off the southern coastline of El Hierro, the potential island could easily join up with the existing island over time.

Either way, the anticipation of a rising land mass has people excited. The Canary Islands newspaper La Provincia proclaimed, "The Monster Rises Out of the Water." Meanwhile other Spanish newspapers debate who would take responsibility for the new territory.

Residents of El hiero have been evacuated now due to the Sulfurous fumes, threefold rise in C02 and the 10,000 minor but increasingly shallow focus earthquakes.

An island nation runs out of water!

Tuvalu is an island nation which lies in the Pacific Ocean to the East of Australia. It has declared a state of emergency stating that it only has several days worth of freshwater left after a serious period of drought. The six month drought caused by the La Nina weather pattern has stopped the normal rains in the region. This is coupled with the fact that Tuvalu's groundwater has been contaminated by rising sea levels and therefore is not drinkable.

Neighbouring Australia and New Zealand are stepping in with aid to Tuvalu in the form of desalinisation equipment to stop the island running dry.

Seismologists face a trial over failure to predict Italian earthquake

Next week six scientists and an official go on trial in Italy for manslaughter over the earthquake in L'Aquila that killed 309 people two years ago.

This extraordinary case has attracted international attention because science itself seemed to be on trial, with the seven defendants apparently charged for failing to predict the magnitude 6.3 earthquake that struck on the night of 6 April 2009.

Scientists cannot yet say when an earthquake is going to happen with any precision, even in a seismically active zone. And over 5,000 scientists from around the world have signed a letter supporting those on trial.

British comedian David Walliams swims the Thames River

UK comedian from Little Britain, David Walliams is swimming the length of the river Thames (140miles) for the Big Splash Challenge for Sport Relief and is due to arrive in London in the next few days.

He has however been advised not to swim through the London section of the Thames due to the amount of sewage that has been dumped in it.

Thames Water said about 500,000 cubic metres of raw sewage has entered the river since Monday.

The company's Richard Aylard said he would strongly recommend not swimming in it.

Disaster strikes Japan

JAPANESE EARTHQUAKE strikes on 11th March.

Measured 8.9 on the Richter scale which is 100 times more powerful than the recent Christchurch earthquake!

Triggered a Tsunami that crashed through the East Coast. The earthquake was also felt hundreds of miles away in Tokyo where buildings swayed and people ran for safety.

As you can see from the picture above, there were hundreds of quakes and aftershocks in the region, many measuring over 6 on the Richter scale.

The unusual amount of tectonic activity has actual caused the whole of Japan to shift position by 8 feet!!!

Since the original eruption, there have been explosions at a Japanese nuclear power plant which is now threatening many people and causing widespread evacuation.

The Death toll stands at 1400 with over 10,000 still missing and 250,000 living in temporary shelters.

This is a really shocking event to have happened. Think about the impacts on Japan's economy, help needed from other nations and other long term impacts of this disaster.

Breaking news 65 killed in ANOTHER Christchurch quake

A 6.3 magnitude earthquake ripped through Christchurch in New Zealand on Tuesday at 1pm killing at least 65 people (death toll expected to rise). The quake was then followed by a series of aftershocks measuring over 5 on the Richter scale which left the city on edge.

Impacts
It is early to tell the full extent of the impacts but so far there are:

Phone lines down
Cracked roads, raised in 1m in parts
80% of the city without power
Water mains burst causing floods in some streets
Many buildings have collapsed
Fires in some parts of the city

This follows the recent 7.1 earthquake in September where just one person was killed.

Why more dead in this 6.3 than the September 7.1?

The focus in this earthquake was much more close to the surface and the epicentre hit the city centre.
The earthquake struck at 1pm when most people were at work in the city whereas the September earthquake struck at dawn when many were in their beds.

Some of our staff her at NCBIS have friends and family living in Christchurch so our thoughts are with them at this time.

China overtakes Japan as the world's second largest economy!

China's economy continues to grow fast. It is expected to overtake USA in the next 10-20 years. However due to large population the GDP per head is still relatively low with millions living in poverty. The growth of China's economy is putting severe stress on the environment as you can see in the picture of Shanghai on the post below. The Chinese population needs to now see the social benefits of this economic growth as they will demand improvements to health and education.

The above image (seen more clearly through the weblink) is an attempted representation of the real size of Africa. The size of Africa is often under rated on most world maps which are not to scale. You will notice however that the UK is often over sized and also in the centre of many maps. Why is that?

Here is a great example of how geography is used by police forces all over the world. Mapping crime is a great tool for understanding patterns of certain at risk areas and this helps police to ascertain the cause of crimes and where they should police most heavily.

Surely no one can swim the whole Amazon?!?

Martin Strel from Slovenia managed it in 2007 and it took him 66 days of approximately 10 hours each day. He suffered from multiple bites and stings to his face and had to wear full protective clothing due to the dangerous fish and animals that inhabit the Amazon. Anaconda's, piranha's and sharks to name just a few.

Water wars over the Nile!

The main conflicts in Africa during the next 25 years could be over that most precious of commodities - water, as countries fight for access to scarce resources.

Potential 'water wars' are likely in areas where rivers and lakes are shared by more than one country, according to a UN Development Programme (UNDP) report.

If the combined population of the three countries the Nile runs through - Ethiopia, Sudan and Egypt - rises as predicted from 150 million today to 340 million in 2050 then there could be intense competition for increasingly limited water resources. Climate change will also enhance this problem as the region is predicted to get drier.

There is already little water left when the Nile reaches the sea. And Egypt is unlikely to take kindly to losing out to Ethiopia - a country with one-tenth of its income. Indeed water is already a catalyst for regional conflict. In the dying years of the previous Ethiopian government, tensions with Egypt increased rapidly when the rulers in Addis Ababa pondered the construction of dams on the Nile.

Ethiopia is now threatening Egypt's claims to Nile waters with many new dam proposals. Can you find out any more on this?

Epicentre - only 15km outside capital city

Impacts

Over 200,000 dead and toll still rising.

Earthquake will completely devastate the economy of Haiti as it is still also suffering the fall out from a number of hurricanes.

The streets of Port-au-Prince are nothing more than a gaping wound, where corpses are tangled with the remains of houses, shops... Schools and hospitals crumble, people are buried under the tons of rubble, or are waiting for a charitable hand that will come to their aid, and while this is happening, the looters are at work in the shops. Some people have lost their children, others their parents. Haiti has new orphans. Today it is very difficult to maintain hope, but as the saying goes, hope makes us live, so let us all join hands and keep hope alive."

Revision technique 1 - make yourself a vocabulary list

As we have learned the mark schemes for all top end answers have strong similarities that you need to be aware of...

1) GEOGRAPHICAL TERMINOLOGY - Always try to use 3/4 key words

2) WRITTEN LANGUAGE ERRORS RARE - Watch your handwriting, spelling and grammar.

3) STRUCTURED ANSWER - Make sure you have mini intro, clear points and mini conclusion.

4) BALANCED POINTS - Where the examiner asks for more than one thing, make sure your answers are balanced.

5) USE CASE STUDIES - Many questions specify that you MUST but all questions expect that you will anyway.

Year 12 Geographical Investigations exam - it all starts now!

Ok so today Year 12 you got a shock! Your mock exam is on Wednesday January 6th and you are aiming to achieve your target grade. Watch this space for revision hints and tips and vital information to help you on your way.

EXAM LAYOUT

You MUST answer all 3 questions (a, b and c) for the CROWDED COASTS section on the paper.

You MUST answer all 3 questions (a,b and c) for the REBRANDING PLACES section of the paper.

TIMING - 1 hour 15 minutes for 70 marks.

This equates roughly to 1 minute per mark with a little thinking time.

10 mark questions = 10 minutes then move on.

15 mark questions = 15 minutes then move on.

Running out of time can severely impact your overall grade so be careful and strict with yourself.

STRUCTURE

Remember that out of the 3 questions in each section there will always be...

1) A data response question worth 10 marks

2) A theoretical knowledge question worth 10 marks

3) A fieldwork and research questions worth 15 marks.

I was very lucky to visit Java in Indonesia which is an absolutely stunning part of the world in terms of its natural beauty. This natural beauty is largely due to its regular volcanic activity.

In just a few weeks time Year 11 are off to the pyramids to collect some valuable data on the attractions and impacts of tourism at each pyramid site. Currently in class students are preparing questionnaires and interviews to ask people when we are out in the field.

A reminder to students going on that trip that money needs to be paid to the cashier ASAP and your reply slips should be returned to your geography teacher.

With fish darting amongst them in a blue lagoon, the Maldivian president and his top team have staged an elaborate stunt to publicise climate change. Billed as the world's first underwater cabinet meeting, President Mohamed Nasheed and 11 ministers, decked in scuba gear, held a meeting 4m (13ft) underwater. While officials said the event itself was light-hearted, the idea is to focus on the plight of the Maldives, where rising sea levels threaten to make the nation uninhabitable by the end of the century.

New Phillippine floods kill dozens

More than 90 people have been killed by flooding and landslides triggered by heavy rain in the northern Philippines this week.
